Patrick Surtain II's Dominant Pro Day Could be Bad News for Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys, including Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn, were on hand at Alabama’s Pro Day to witness Cornerback Patrick Surtain II dominate every single drill he was put through. He’s been a dream and a favorite for them with the 10th overall pick in the first-round, but sadly that dream may have died yesterday afternoon.

The numbers and measurements for Patrick Surtain II couldn’t have been better if he’d scripted everything himself. That dominant performance not only made him quite a bit of money yesterday afternoon, but also solidified himself as arguably the top-ranked CB prospect in the entire 2021 draft class.

This could very well end up being bad news for the Dallas Cowboys. It’s no secret he was someone they were targeting with the 10th overall pick, but that dream may be dead because there’s a really good possibility he could be gone well before they are on the clock.

There are several teams slotted to pick ahead of the Dallas Cowboys who could target Patrick Surtain II to upgrade their secondary, including the division rival the Philadelphia Eagles. That could be a nightmare if that is indeed the way things turned out.

Not only would the Eagles add a top-notch CB to upgrade their secondary, but it keeps the Dallas Cowboys from doing the same. To make matters worse, Dallas’ next top-ranked CB prospect, Caleb Farley, might’ve taken himself out of contention as well after electing to have back surgery.

Dreams have a way of turning into nightmares and that certainly seems like it could be the case for the Dallas Cowboys if their two top-ranked CB prospects are no longer available for them with the 10th overall pick in the first-round. It’s all of course speculation right now, but there’s a pretty good chance that’s the way things turn out.

Would that ruin their entire draft strategy? Probably not, but it could very well force them into turning to their contingency plan. There’s no way of knowing what that is because we don’t know who might still be available, but with the possibility that Surtain and Farley not in play it definitely changes things.

With so many fans around Cowboys Nation with tunnel vision for these two CB prospects this could be one of those nightmares that becomes reality. Patrick Surtain II’s dominant Pro Day and Caleb Farley’s surgery could take both prospects out of play for the Cowboys. What then?

This of course is all speculation on my part right now. However, I don’t think it’s that big of a stretch this could very well come to fruition. It might be time to look at some of the other top-ranked prospects who could be in play. It’s always good to have a contingency plan in place if things do indeed fall apart.

Cowboy fan since '74 listened to the cowboys only win in 1_15 season against the redakins on the radio while at work. So I don't actually agree with taking a db with the 10th pick. In my opinion a blue chip lt is far more valuable and worthy of such opportunity since I don't see us having another dismal season. While a db in the second round will still of quality pedigree. We can't hinder our progress toward winning without a tyron smith type to replace the legendary 77 tyron smith first.

"Mediocre Ogre" sure leaves mediocre comments....no value whatsoever. Hopefully the Cowboys will get Surtain, but Pitts-Farley-Horn would be fine, or if Penei Sewell ever dropped far enough.

I wouldn’t take Farley. Too many injury concerns to risk the #10 pick on him. We’ll be lucky to get Surtain after he blew up at pro day. But if he’s there go get him. Not sure Horn is worthy of that pick. Would trade down a bit if we wanna get him. If no Surtain trade down and get Moehrig or Horn. Still like to get Parsons some how. Think he projects as our best bet to be an impact player.

  I think Horn is very much in play for the Cowboys at 10. I actually wouldn't be surprised if he's Dan Quinn's preferred CB.

He's got a back injury (though minor) and has had a torn ACL injury before , two of the worst injuries to have especially in NFL 2 guys who come to mind who suffered back injuries and never be the same , Gronk And Tiger Woods , shout out to him , Both were dominant before but after , they weren't the same , only thing going for Farley is he's still young so maybe he can shake it off , but it's quite concerning for me with those 2 injuries , don't be surprised if he drops out of 1st round

I don't think the surgery Farley is having will affect his status. It isn't a huge deal. A microdiscectomy procedure uses minimally invasive techniques to provide relief from pain caused by a lumbar herniated disc. During the procedure, a small part of the bone over the nerve root and/or disc material under the nerve root is taken out. He'll be in and out quickly, and should be in good shape well before training camp. So if Surtain isn't there at 10, Farley most certainly will be and the Cowboys should grab him. Actually, I think Surtain will still be available when the Cowboys go on the clock. I am looking for Philadelphia to grab a wide receiver or tight end.

  The surgery isn't the big issue for me. The fact he's still having back issues even after opting out the 2020 season is the bigger concern IMO. For me that's a big red flag and I wouldn't feel comfortable drafting him in the Top 10 because of it. The Dallas Cowboys may feel differently though.

Why bother picking anybody at #10? Jerruh has high standards of mediocrity to uphold. Making a pick at ten increases the likelihood that they might accidentally end up with a quality player, when Jerruh is only interested in JAGs.

This is good news for Jerry Jones. It increases the chances that another potentially great player is gone before the ‘boys pick at #10. Deep down inside, Jerry needs to draft a JAG at 10, then massively overpay him when his rookie deal runs out. Jerruh has high standards of mediocrity to uphold!
