Jerry Jones is his own worst enemy as a General Manager

There is a common saying that “loose lips will sink ships.” If that were true, Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones would have a trail of wreckage in his path.

Jones has been the owner and general manager of the Cowboys since 1989. During his tenure, the team has hired eight different head coaches, drafted five Hall of Fame players, and built a state-of-the-art stadium to fans’ delight.

The Dallas Cowboys have been Forbes Most Valuable Team for 15 years in a row. Not to mention, this organization has won three championships since Jerry signed that $150 million cashier’s check.

So, why would anyone have a problem with how Jerry Jones runs his franchise? As an owner, he does an excellent job.

It is his executive role that causes heartburn.

There have been moments when Jerry’s antics have been blown out of proportion. Other times, he has provided ammunition to skeptics who believe he is inept as a general manager.

The Draft Board Debacle

The best place to start this discussion is 2022.

The first day of the NFL draft had concluded, but Jerry was just getting started. Dallas drafted Offensive Lineman Tyler Smith from Tulsa with the 24th pick in the first round.

With the media as an audience, Jerry reverted to his alter ego.

When someone asked him where Smith was ranked on their draft board, his response turned the internet upside down.

He not only provided a verbal response but a visual one as well.

Granted, it took a skilled person to capture a picture of the draft board as well as decipher what names were on it.

To prove to reporters that the Cowboys had Tyler Smith ranked higher on their board than Kenyon Green and Zion Johnson, Jerry Jones showed a copy of the team’s draft board.Jerry Jones: “I’m dead serious.”Stephen Jones: “Don’t show them that. … Put that sheet down.” pic.twitter.com/vvj2NV4aEr

At that point, Jerry was treating their draft process similarly to how I conduct my fantasy football selections.

Entertainment superseded the importance of protecting the integrity of the work that his scouting department had completed.

The Arkansas native is a showman and that makes up a large part of his brand. It is likely that will never change, but it does deteriorate the overall image of the Cowboys front office.

JERRY IS A GREAT OWNER BUT WHAT ABOUT GENERAL MANAGER

The Amari Cooper Trade

Should Jerry Jones have traded Amari Cooper without a suitable solution at the wide receiver position? Possibly, but that isn’t my main concern with that trade.

Getting a 5th-round pick and swapping 6th-round picks in a market where Marquise “Hollywood” Brown netted a 1st-round pick is inexplicable. To be fair, Baltimore threw in a third-round pick.

Jerry orchestrated the Cooper deal as if he had never played poker a day in his life.

The Cleveland Browns and every NFL team that needed a wide receiver saw Jerry coming with his entire hand of cards facing forward.

Cooper’s salary did impact the Dallas Cowboys’ leverage. He was a receiver with back-to-back years of 1,100 receiving and 13 combined touchdowns in 2019 and 2020. His 2021 statistics in the fourth year with the team didn’t do Dallas any favors either.

However, once Cowboys General Manager Jerry Jones began speaking out against Amari Cooper’s play, he cut his own legs right out from under him.

Teams knew that Jerry had grown sour of the former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver, and it was only a matter of time before the separation would take place.

As an effective general manager, you keep as much information as you can close to the vest.

Jerry Jones has to realize that he is not just a fan — he is the top executive in the company.

When he opens his mouth about players that he knows he wants to trade, those crucial details will cost the team any remaining leverage they have.

The Dallas Cowboys had to find that out the hard way, apparently.

Mike McCarthy, Jerry Jones. Jerry Jones is his own worst enemy as a General Manager

The Mike McCarthy Joke

A head coach potentially in the hot seat comes with added pressure all by itself. Accepting criticism comes with the territory. However, when the snarky joke comes from your owner/general manager, you have officially hit rock bottom.

Jerry Jones decided to provide color commentary at a pre-draft news conference with his head coach sitting at arm’s length of him.

What was Coach McCarthy thinking at that moment?

No one knows.

Jerry Jones joking while sitting next to Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy: “Drafting is not our problem, coaching is.”

The forced laugh that appeared on McCarthy’s face at that moment was excruciating to witness. It felt like he was part of a Kevin Hart stand-up and the joke was about him. But he was too afraid to say anything back because of the potential embarrassment.

Maybe I have a pathetic sense of humor. However, it’s equally realistic to believe that another head coaching candidate would look at that clip and find it less than hilarious.

Mike McCarthy may not be every fan’s cup of tea, but he is the guy Jerry hired to lead this team to a Super Bowl.

Being enlisted as part of the general manager’s media entertainment wasn’t in the job description.

I believe the Dallas Cowboys front office drafts good players, puts a good product on the field, and will continue to be contenders in the NFC.

They are also a team that is led by a general manager who is, at times, his own worst enemy. Unfortunately, two things can be true.

Hopefully when JJ passes, Stephen will stop drinking the family Kool-aid and get a REAL GM.
  2. Fred Goodwin
Jethro is an idiot. He wants credit for building three Super Bowl winners in his first seven years as GM, yet he won't take the blame for the Cowboys' mediocrity of the last 28 years. The man has lost whatever golden touch he had.

When Jerry said drafting isn't the problem, coaching is..... I don't think he was talking about Mike Mccarthy, I think he was talking about Kellen Moore!! If he thought Mike Mccarthy was the problem then why is he still the head coach while Kellen Moore is now gone!? If he was talking about Mike Mccarthy, or the whole coaching staff, I think they all would be gone, including Mike Mccarthy!! And as far as the Amari Cooper trade goes, we didn't get much in return for him cause nobody wanted him!! And he was making way more money than what he was worth!! There's nobody gonna give up a high draft pick for a receiver making $20 million a year and not producing at the level a $20 million receiver should be producing at!! If that was the case, then we would've had more than just Cleveland willing to trade for him!! But at the end of the day, Cleveland was the only team willing to trade for him, so we had to take what we could get!!

Leaked draft boards after the fact are the least of Dallas's problems. There isn't much in tactical intel for other teams to take from them, but they do provide fans with a fascinating insight into team thinking - and also often undercut the common criticism that the team "reached" for some picks in the draft. Jones absolutely has a big mouth, and it can be annoying for sure. But it's really not a big deal from an NFL franchise perspective. And the complaints about the Cooper trade have been way off base from day one. Nothing Jones said or did ahead of time changed the fact that Cooper, while still very good, was expensive, no longer young, and suffers frequent injuries that drag down his play when he's most needed. If Dallas blundered with that trade, then so did the 30 teams that allowed Cleveland to get him for cheap. In reality, Cleveland got him for cheap because there wasn't much demand to trade for him. The reality of his trade market was confirmed this past off-season, when similarly effective veterans such as Cooks and Gilmore went for the same cheap price. No, Dallas's mistake at WR last year was in counting on Gallup to fully recover from his injury by early in the year. That didn't happen, and Dallas was left with a hole created not by Cooper being gone but because the guy they kept instead of Cooper wasn't his usual self.

  12. David A Nugent
What are you talking about? The Cowboys are having a great draft.
    1. David A Nugent
Christopher Summers the Eagles had 80 sacks last season and in the first round within the top 10 you pick a defensive line pick why would you do that? When you lost Miles Sanders, do you imagine what kind of offensive team you would’ve had if you would’ve picked Gibbs No Eagles, you didn’t get better you stayed the same
    2. Christopher Summers
David A Nugent The draft was terrible Eagles got A lot better and Cowboys got a lot wores
    3. Ed Davila
David A Nugent they need coaching and bring in players for the spots they need not just draft choices
  13. lonewolfz28
The draft board debacle goes much further back than 2022. Bloggin' the Boys have been putting together their draft boards from photos from Jerry's interviews as far back as 2010. IIRC, they've deciphered most of 3 more since then.
  14. Ed Davila
Jerry is a JOKE, he reminds me of Joe CLUELESS, and before anyone comments, we fans have had the same BS for 28 years with only 4 playoff wins, Jerry just keeps taking nothing will change till Jerry hires a real GM and allows him to run all Football operations and he would bring in a good coach and a good OC nothing will change
    1. Cowboys fan
You do realize that Jerry has 3 Super Bowl rings since he's been the owner/GM right.... Just sayin!! And before you say that was Jimmy Johnson, I'll go ahead and say, if it wasn't for Jerry, Jimmy wouldn't have been the coach of the Cowboys, and if it wasn't for Jerry, Jimmy wouldn't have had the players he had to work with either!! And another thing is, if Jimmy was the reason for us winning those 3 Super Bowls, then why didn't he win anymore when he was coaching the Dolphins!? It's cause Jerry was the mastermind behind those 3 Super Bowls!! If you want somebody to blame for the drought, then the one you should be blaming is Stephen Jones!! Everything was good until he got more control over the team!! Stephen is the reason we're in this drought, not Jerry!!
      1. Cowboyj
Your high bro, Jimmy johnson orchestrated those trades that built the cowboys and they have been a joke ever since he left. HELLLLLLOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
      2. CowboysFanSince72
You’re smoking something laced with hemp, if you believe what you just typed.
    2. Lawrence
Great analogy Ed!!! Jerry and Stephen Jones are the primary reasons the Cowboys are where they are today. Stephen Jones substitutes being cheap and stingy for being smart about football business. Jerry Jones substitutes being wealthy for being smart about intelligent management of the MOST VISIBLE FRANCHISE in professional sports. It ALWAYS leaves Cowboys Fans on the outside looking in.
