Hall of Fame QB calls out Mike McCarthy’s play calling

Cowboys’ woeful offense remains mid in fantasy football 2

The Dallas Cowboys, fresh off a bye week, controlled the game last night for a half. They really had one decent drive the entire game.

Now, Monday morning, another Pro Football Hall of Famer is taking aim at the way that Mike McCarthy runs this offense.

A problem that the Dallas Cowboys have had the entire year is how the offense operates. It is bland, and feels like sandpaper, they do nothing well outside of CeeDee Lamb, and the criticism has gotten worse by the week.

The Cowboys aren’t very good. But the biggest problem is that they aren’t any fun to watch.

After leading 10-6 at halftime last night, the Cowboys’ offense had a total of 15 yards in the third quarter.

The 49ers came out of the locker room and simply dominated the Cowboys, scoring 21 unanswered points, and once again, the Cowboys waited until it was too late to try and make a comeback.

Although they did have a chance to take the lead, once again Mike McCarthy’s offense, mustered 0 yards on the final drive.

Kurt Warner

Pro Football Hall of Famer, Kurt Warner took to twitter this morning to remind all of us of something we already know was a problem.

Mike McCarthy has the worst offense in football. He said, “Man, this Cowboys tape is a tough watch again… play design, details/execution (bc can’t be sure which it is), Dak not playing well, etc… it would be so frustrating watching that as an O!!!”

See the tweet below.

Man, this Cowboys tape is a tough watch again… play design, details/execution (bc can’t be sure which it is), Dak not playing well, etc… it would be so frustrating watching that as an O!!!

He is right though. The play design, the details, the execution is so bad. I can’t tell you how many times last night I saw Dak Prescott throw a pass to a spot on the field where TWO guys were standing. Looking like they had no idea what was going on.

Like, how does this continue to happen?

First it was Troy Aikman calling the Cowboys wide receivers lazy and not running great routes, then Jerry Jones the owner and GM, called out Mike McCarthy last week, now Warner.

Something has to give, right?

The Cowboys returned from their bye and didn’t look a whole lot better for most of the game than they did in a 47-9 loss at home to Detroit two weeks ago.

Prescott threw two interceptions for a third straight game — the first Cowboys quarterback to do that in 32 years — and struggled to generate any consistent offense until the fourth quarter.

Kurt is correct in saying Dak is not playing well, but look at what this offense is doing. Nobody can get open, they can’t run the ball, it is so bad!

Starting To Unravel

This team is starting to unravel from everything. The defense can’t stop a cold, the offense has like 4 good drives a game, and after last night, Trevon Diggs, a leader on this team couldn’t hold back.

Mike Leslie tweeted during the game asking what Diggs was doing on a play due to his lack of effort and Diggs wasted zero time, to find it on Twitter and say something still in uniform.

“That’s what you took from that?” Diggs said. “Out of that whole play, that’s what you took from that? You don’t know football. You can’t do nothing that I do. You can’t go out there and do nothing. Stay in your lane, buddy. Stop trying me, dog.”

“Just asking the question, Trevon,” Leslie said. “I mean, I’m happy to have you answer the question.”

Check out the tweet below.

Trevon just came out of the locker room to approach me about this tweet. He said I don’t know football, and I can’t do what he does. He and I are in agreement about that. He didn’t offer an answer as to what he was doing on the play, however. https://t.co/WaJJCRkFo5

The moral of the story is I have never seen this much going on with a team since Dak took over.

They are broken, can’t fix it, and others like Kurt Warner are seeing it just like us fans. At what point in time does Jerry have enough?

This sucks to watch every single week, it is not even enjoyable anymore.

I agree 100%. I've been a Cowboys fan for over 40 yrs and I can't even watch these games past the first qtr. I've turned off the last 4 games before the first qtr ends.

Shane, thank you for this well written article. I have had my fingers in my ears for a long time about McCarthy. I have said that Dak should go off script and call his own plays.....sure could not be as bad as this. This team is loaded with talent, they lack continuity and motivation. It would be impossible to be motivated by this tired scheme and sad play calling. I see Jerry's dilemma as well, there is not that many coaches out there to take this sinking ship.

There were plenty of coaches available at the beginning of the season granted they were older coaches that have been around a while the Cowboys need to find a young hungry head coach Jerry Jones doesn't want a strong head coach that thinks independently he wants a coach that will kiss his ass and collect a paycheck Mike McCarthy ran Kellen Moore out of town because he said Kellen Moore just wanted to score a lot of points and Mike McCarthy said he wanted to have a running game so the defense would not have to spend so much time on the field well apparently Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy weren't on the same page because we have no running game because we waited too long to upgrade the offensive line and we don't have any capable running backs and I agree with everybody our offense is antiquated I never liked Mike McCarthy in the first place and I can't believe Jerry kept him for one more year and I think that was all to appease Dak

for players it would be frustrating if the scheming and assignments are not working. Also injuries is big but hey guys are paid to play and give best effort. I am surprised at Diggs even messing with twitter but understand his frustration. To do what they were doing under quin and then go to zimmers d and short handed at that. Mccarthy had done a fair job through last year but the guys under him peeyooo. But it starts at the top. the gm let players walk, let quin walk, took wayyyy to long to sign dak and ceedee and got bargain basement players with everyone on one year deals and when he had multiple opportunities to get game changer players the billionaires played poor me. But we go forward regardless and it will require changes I am not sure the gm wants to make. And even if he does he will hinder or break it some way right out of the gate. 29 yrs and that is his m. o. But hey the money is rollin in........
