Fans’ biggest gripe about the Cowboys’ latest head coach hire

47
Brian Schottenheimer was the safe hire for the Dallas Cowboys

When I woke up on Friday morning, the Dallas Cowboys head coach “search” was filled with rumors and speculation. I waited for breaking news all day, but after sleeping just two hours, my 38-year old mind and body couldn’t take it anymore, and I hit the sack early.

Waking up this morning to the news that the Dallas Cowboys actually did it. They hired OC Brian Schottenheimer as the 10th head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

So you’re telling me that after interviewing or placing phone calls to coaches like Deion Sanders, Robert Saleh, Pete Carroll, and Leslie Frazier, they really sat there and decided that a has-been play-caller who didn’t even call plays as the offensive coordinator under Mike McCarthy is the best option to get this team over the hump?

Wow.

I’m almost lost for words, but in a way, I’m not that surprised because this safe behavior is exactly how Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, and the rest of the decision-makers in the front office do things.

From the loyal fans of Cowboys Nation, please stop being this way!

Take some risks. What you’ve been doing over the course of the past 30 years has not been the winning formula.

As fans, we are fed up. Brian Schottenheimer might be the best fit for YOU (more on this subject tomorrow), but he is not the best fit for the Dallas Cowboys.

Jerry Jones better get ready for the backlash that will come on social media all weekend, and he will need armor for the slings and arrows that he will be dodging at the introductory press conference on Monday morning.

History has shown us what to expect of this hire, and as fans, we have plenty of reasons to hate the move.

A man in a suit and tie looks ahead with a serious expression.

Take a Risk For Once

The biggest gripe that fans will have with Brian Schottenheimer being named the new head coach is that it’s more of the same nepotism that has kept the franchise stagnant for the past 30 years.

Take a risk!

Go after one of the hot coordinator names that all other teams looking for head coaches are doing.

Not even a phone call placed to the Lions for permission to speak to Ben Johnson or Aaron Glenn.

Not a lick of interest in Vikings DC Brian Flores, who also has head coaching experience.

How can the franchise ever move forward if there is no new perspectives?

No innovation.

It’s just Jerry speak, and if you don’t speak Jerry, you don’t belong in the building.

Maybe if we tell Jerry in a way he can understand, he will open his eyes.

How about a Southern country idiom? That seems to be the way he likes to communicate. Hey Jerry, my granny used to say “you can’t expect fresh bath water if you never clean the tub”.

Basically, you can dump out the water from the tub (change coaches and players), but if you don’t wipe the tub clean (change beliefs and processes) before adding more water for your next bath, you can’t possibly step out of the tub with the desired expectations.

This is a pattern, and it goes back all the way to Bill Parcells. Jerry Jones loves to have an assistant on staff that he can groom for head coach in case he ever gets unhappy with the current head coach.

The only catch is that if the groomed coach becomes a hot coaching candidate around the league, Jerry will let him go because he is too expensive.

Sean Payton was that person for Bill Parcells, and he became a hot coaching commodity and departed for New Orleans.

Jason Garrett was that person for Wade Phillips, and went on to take over midseason, coaching the Cowboys for the next 10 years. Kellen Moore was that person for Mike McCarthy before Brian Schottenheimer became that person.

It’s all a pattern of insane decision-making rooted in comfortability, and we are sick of it.

Sean Payton left the Cowboys and took the Saints to the Super Bowl. Kellen Moore left the Cowboys and are leading the Eagles offense to the Super Bowl. Dan Quinn left the Cowboys and took the Commanders to the NFC Championship. We've had talented coaches, but we've got an owner problem, not a coaching problem. Until that changes we are stuck with an endless run of Jerry's mouth not championships...

If you hate jerry as much as I do say eye!!!

Jerry doesn't want anybody that will take the limelight away from him. He just wants a yes man type without a brain. Congrats !! Hes your man. I'm glad. I hate the cowgirls anyway..

Always remember, guys—no one will ever be above Jerry Jones. That’s why he hires puppets for coaches, ensuring he remains in control while the team continues to fall short. He wants yes-men, not real leaders, because he refuses to relinquish power. As long as he prioritizes his ego over winning, the Cowboys will never return to glory. Year after year, we watch talented rosters get wasted, critical decisions get mishandled, and championship hopes crumble under the weight of his stubbornness. Until real change happens at the top, this franchise will remain stuck in mediocrity, living off past successes while true contenders leave us behind.

the only way for this to actually even work is with quality coaches under him not family or friends. And then it still takes great schemes, amazing coaching, and enough really good players that want wining bad enough to play that way.

You can’t keep blaming snake oil salesman Jerry if you keep buying the product so I blame the fans you complain and complain and then keep showing up to games and buying his products STOP GOING TO THE GAMES and make a stand

Tired of saying maybe next year. Another bad decision Jerry has made. He acts like Al Davis and he is going to keep Mike Zimmerman. It's going to be another mediocre year again. I am just tired of it. Jerry has to go as GM.

Why is everyone suprised at this? Jerry was never going to hire a coach that outshines him and might be given credit for turning around the losing culture of this front office! He overpaid a mediocre QB and now has hired a mediocre coach because the mediocre QB said so. Until the Jones's family gets over this delusion that they are "Football experts" this team is stuck in purgatory! Steven's handling of the salary cap and free agency is abysmal! Why expect anything different from these Losers? They really deserve the title of "Losers". They have tried so hard to replicate the Jimmy Johnson years, and have failed for 30 freaking years. Webster should change the definition of Loser in the dictionary to Jones family!!!

Reminds me of another billionaire who creates his own reality……

I'm declining my option to renew my fanhood of the Dallas Cowboys for the foreseeable future. Other teams make tremendous moves to recreate their roster or culture but the ownership here has ignored the only trend in football that works, change. Most notably, dramatic change when winning isn't happening in the playoffs. Wasn't it Jerry that fired Mr. Landry? And we haven't won a thing since Jimmy's team was depleted? Sick and tired of Jerry thinking he knows football. He's a used car salesman running a football team. Full of lies and speculation. Good luck to the rest of you that choose to stay.

This is the worst possible move that has been made by the Cowboys owners, plus getting rid of the rest of the coaching staff was another bad move, what the HELL, its time you give the Dallas Cowboys a coaching staff that will get the job done, we as fans are FURIOUS!!! Get a grip on life and the NFL.

I am expecting the offseason to be handled in the same bargain basement fashion. Shopping for free agents 3 weeks after it starts, counting on rookies to be the answer to plugging major holes. Yep the 2025 season is over before the first minicamp.

A head coach that would be out of his depth in a mud puddle is the final straw.
  12. Fenton
    What ?? Huh?? I don't understand
  13. Reese
So the guy who the guy you just fired didn't trust or believe could call plays for him, that's who you thought was the perfect choice to be your head coach??? Brilliant thinking Old Man Jerry. Top notch. The Cowboys will be a national punchline until Mr. Burns leaves the building or Earth, whichever one comes first.

We should have fired McCarthy last year. Promoted Dan Quinn too Head Coach. Look what he is doing with Commanders, they are one win away from Super Bowl. I want Commander to get to the Super Bowl and Win, so Jerry Jones knows what he is doing is not smart. 30years no Super Bowl. Jerry Jones does not want to get to the super bowl ever, its just talk. He will pass away and still no Super Bowl. Son will take over and it will even worse. Its hard to be a fan
    1. Steve Durning
Yes u would think his sons would talk some sense to him , but I guess that’s why they say apple don’t fall far from the tree!!!!!
    2. lonewolfz28
Problem is, even if they moved on from McCarthy a year ago and promoted Dan Quinn, he likely wouldn't have had much success, either. Jerry and Stephen are the biggest obstacles to success. Dak and his contract are a close #2. Washington had already invested heavily on the defense. All Dan had to do was make a few tweaks and a couple of additions and he was ready to go. An outstanding rookie QB falling into their lap after the Bears took the overhyped Caleb Williams was icing on the cake. The non-meddling ownership and enough cap/free rein to get what he needed to plug specific holes were the keys to success.
      1. Virginia
Yes the Jones family are in control. They won't let our team win.

I have been a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan since the mid-60s, my dad a die-hard Giants fan, so naturally I was in New York Giants fan too, until 1:00 Sunday afternoon back around 68 or 69 the Cowboys were featuring their cheerleaders, I told my dad, I like that team, my dad being the Die Hard New York Giants fan that he was, was so upset with me for liking the Dallas Cowboys, when he asked me why in the world I would like the Cowboys, I looked at my dad, being a young impressionable boy, I simply replied, dad, they have cheerleaders! And I have been a Cowboys fan ever since, but Jerry The Jerk is going to make me turn to another team, I live in Baltimore Maryland, never have I envisioned myself being a Baltimore Ravens fan, but here I am, so I say to the Dallas Cowboys organization.. goodbye!!
    1. Virginia
Dan Quinn, he was the best choice to replace McCarthy. But NO we have to put some idiots in there as coaches, oh wait Jones needed a slave to tell what to do.

It's getting hard to stay a fan, and I've been one for 50 years!
    1. DebiB
Me too! I’ll be 65 in February & started watching DC with my Daddy at 12 yrs old. You can take the man out of Hillbilly land but ya can’t take the hillbilly out of Jerry. Remember the TV show Dallas?? Back then we didn’t always know who owners were, but we LOVED TOM LANDRY!!!!
  17. Steve Durning
Looks like this life long cowboys fan is going to be a ravens fan!!! And it kills me to say that but enough is enough!

I've always enjoyed the works of Edgar Allen Poe, so when the new Baltimore franchise took Ravens, in part to honor him, I've always kept an eye on them. Not nearly as much as I have the Cowboys for nearly 57 years now, but still enough to enjoy their run. I may tag along with you, Steve. At least until the Jones family is finally run out of the NFL.
      1. Steve Durning
Yea wish that would happen soon but wouldn’t hold our breath!!
  18. Steve Durning
Could not have said it better myself!!!!!
  19. Daniel
JERRY JONES IS THE JOE BIDEN OF THE NFL! FJJ!
  20. Daniel
Not only is this guy not head coach material HES NOT OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR MATERIAL EITHER!!! See where his offenses have ranked during his tenure at ALL the places he crawled into! He's a Bum just like the Jonses! Circus music should be played everything that idiot Jerry shows his ugly demented mug
    1. lonewolfz28
Yup, Brian Schottenheimer is Wade Phillips...without the skills at a coordinator position. Come to think of it, he compares unfavorably to any prior Cowboys HC, even Dave Campo.
