Dallas Cowboys 2020 Offseason Preview: Safety

Jeff Heath

Safety was one of the most-discussed positions of last year for the Dallas Cowboys and that will likely continue in this 2020 offseason. With one starter likely heading out the door, how far will Dallas go to reload and perhaps even upgrade at safety?

Jeff Heath’s contract has expired and most are ready for a fresh face in the starting lineup. Heath has been an adequate starter for the last three seasons but nobody would suggest he’s anything more than average.

2020 Safety Contract Statuses

  • Signed
    • Xavier Woods
    • Donovan Wilson
  • Free Agents
    • Jeff Heath (UFA)
    • Kavon Frazier (UFA)
    • Darian Thompson (UFA)
UFA = Unrestricted

While I could see Heath coming back as a versatile depth option and core special teams player, I don’t expect Dallas to offer him anything beyond a minimal backup deal. Jeff will likely test the open market and we’ll see how that goes for him.

Meanwhile, Xavier Woods didn’t have quite the breakout season in 2019 that we hoped for but he remains a player with perceived upside. Heath’s free agency actually helps Woods; Dallas will be even more ready to lean on Xavier in 2020 and focus on the other starting position.

While Donovan Wilson is a young prospect that we’re excited about, trusting him to start next season would be a incredible leap of faith. Wilson flashed plenty during the last preseason but has yet to get any real-game opportunities.

Free agents Kavon Frazier and Darian Thompson are both solid depth players but neither has ever shown much beyond that. Most would rather roll the dice on Wilson than turn the job over to them.

That leaves safety as a position where the Cowboys could really do anything, much like we anticipated in 2019. But Dallas punted last year by sticking with Heath and Woods and perhaps that’s a warning sign for what could or couldn’t happen now.

Dallas Cowboys Defensive Coordinator Mike Nolan (Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports)

A major factor in 2020 is the arrival of Mike Nolan as the new defensive coordinator. With Rod Marinelli and Kris Richard out, we could see a different perspective and priority around the safety position going forward.

Dallas has been content using the undrafted Heath and late-round picks like Woods and Frazier to man the position recently. They decided not to spend big money on Earl Thomas last year or a high draft pick.

However, the cornerback position is just as needy as safety. Just keeping Byron Jones may be the big-money move for the entire secondary, forcing Dallas to look to the bargain bin if they want an experienced option to replace Jeff Heath.

However, a combination of re-signing Jones and drafting a safety high could also be on the table. Again, it goes back to what level of priority Nolan and Mike McCarthy put on the position.

It was a lot easier to predict offseason strategy when we had the trends and understanding of what Jason Garrett’s staff liked to do. But this is a great example of how all of us, even lowly bloggers, are now in a learning process with the new coaches.

Will the Cowboys finally make a major investment at safety in 2020? Or will we see more of the same; looking for value and hoping it’s not too much of a liability?

Theirs a couple free agents that would be a decent pick up for us if it weren't too much of an asking price, Ha Ha Clinton Dix, Karl Joseph, Demarious Randall, Tre Boston, Devin McCourty, Vonn Bell & a few others that'd be a decent pick up & upgrade over having Heath starting. Donovan Wilson showed some flashes last season with his playmaking abilities but idk if he's done enough for The coaches to make him a starter. They should have put him on the field starting the last few games of the season to see if he could hold it down out there with everyone going full game speed & their top players on the field to go up against so we could had seen if he could be there starting ss going forward & we wouldn't have to use any assets to find us a new starting ss. This draft is pretty deep though at safety & there's free agents available that are starting caliber guys but rather see us use our cap to keep our own players, mainly our starting players (B Jones, Dak, Coop, and wouldn't mind getting Quinn signed for a few more seasons. Dallas could keep all these guys too if they were to restructure a few contacts, if not to at least restructure some these older guys that have big cap hits possibly look for a trade or just cut em cause there's a few that have contacts they aren't worth what they getting paid anymore like Crawford & punter Jones... That'd give us about 10 mill right there with just those 2 guys if we were to cut em, hoping they do something though so we can retain Dak, Jones & Coop at least! Cause we don't have any on roster that could step in and fill in for any these guys as #1 at their position & all had said they wanna be cowboys for life, being able to spend their entire career playing for the Star. It's gonna be an interesting off season but I'm excited to see what this now staff will do with management of the players & to see the philosophy in which they use in the draft, can't wait to see in which direction the staff goes & transactions that are made this off-season cause there's gonna be quite a change to our roster, hope that the changes that are made though are positive ones, just a few signings & picks could take this team up a notch, these next few months need to fly by already so we can get started on finding us some new solid talent that'll help upgrade at a few spots, done us some damn playmakers to help us get turnovers finally with the teams been lacking for years now! Grabbing a player like DelPit, McKinney or grab us a dt or cb in the 1st than get Kyle Digger or Winfield Jr with one our next few picks wouldn't be a bad selection if we were to get any of these players to have become our starting ss for years to come playing alongside X Woods who is a good player but if paired up to one of those others it'd make Woods am even better player & give us a young talented tandem at the back end our D for years to come!!!

This is the perfect opportunity for the Cowboys to take the bull by the horns and stock up the defensive back end. The thought should be sign Jones to the second tag to be able to match if the price is right, draft a safety high, draft additional corners in the mid AND late rounds as well as explore inexpensive free agent options. Go ahead and sweat to make this defensive on par with the offensive, freekin' load up Nolan's cupboard and let's do this dang thang!!!
