Cowboys CB unit ranks 5th on ESPN’s Mike Clay’s list

Trevon Diggs Ties Cowboys' Franchise Record With 11th Interception vs Washington

Mike Clay is a writer and analyst for ESPN who provides year-round NFL, fantasy football, and other major content for the network.

Yesterday he released his 2023 NFL cornerback unit ranks and depth charts on Twitter.

Clay has the Cowboys locked in as the 5th best unit. Trailing the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Green Bay Packers.

For a group outside of Trevon Diggs that struggled at times a season ago, it is awesome to know that because of one simple trade, the backend is now a strength for this team.

The Cowboys traded for Stephon Gilmore in March.

Adding a former defensive player of the year on the other side of a two-time Pro Bowler and First-Team all pro in Diggs is beautiful.

We’ve likely seen the last of Anthony Brown in Dallas, but the unit will round out with DaRon Bland, who has the chance to be a really good player, and Nahshon Wright.

Let’s also not forget one player who has been rumored to switch to corner this season and could be an X factor for Dallas.

Israel Mukuamu.

With the Cowboys resigning Donovan Wilson, Mukuamu is way too talented to be the fourth safety on the roster. Let’s be honest. He is already better than Kelvin Joseph.

Joseph is slotted to be the 5th corner on the depth chart, and if someone goes down due to injury, I feel more confident in Mukuamu than him. Joseph is just not good.

Though, when you look at the list, which you can view at the top of this post, the best units in football have two studs on each side of the field.

Dallas has Diggs and Gilmore, as we know.

The Dolphins have Jalen Ramsey and Xavien Howard. The Jets have D.J. Reed and Ahmad Gardner. Philly has Darius Slay and James Bradberry, and the Packers have Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes.

It then comes down to the “others.” What are you going to get from the rest of the depth chart?

Bland has shown flashes that he can be the team’s third guy, but can we trust him more times than not? We can; the problem is, those that don’t follow the Cowboys might not.

We will see Diggs, Gilmore, and Bland as the main three corners on the field this season.

Players get hurt as the year goes on, and things will change. That said, I like what the Cowboys have behind Diggs and Gilmore.

Dallas drafted Eric Scott Jr. in the sixth round, so don’t expect to see him on the field unless it is with the special team’s group.

Another underrated aspect is that Micah Parsons is moving to defensive end full-time.

With Parsons rushing almost all the time, this will put some extra pressure on the opposing quarterback.

I expect Dallas to force a lot of turnovers again this year.

The Cowboys have done everything right thus far in the offseason. It is now time for them to show it when it counts.

I think they gonna be better than 5th

Somebody please tell me what other NFL team has 4 starting CB’s like Dallas. (Diggs, Gilmore, Lewis, and Bland) These rankings are ridiculously biased especially for the Eagles. Hurts has one good season and all of a sudden he’s the best QB in the NFC? The media has a serious skewed love affair with them.

Bruh I swear this is gas. But I'll just STFU. Can't wait until this season. We play 3 of them. We'll see.
  5. Barry Brown
Trevon Diggs is overrated. He gets burned 50% of the time. Living off his 2021 interceptions.

Barry Brown That was true in 2021 when he got those ints but he improved a lot last year in actual coverage.

Honestly the eagles corners aren't that good, their d line makes them look good.

Important phrase here is "writer and analyst for ESPN". After that, might as well ignore anything else.

So no mention of J.Lewis? He is easily better than Wright or Joseph and still currently on the team. Wright and Joseph are fighting for the last corner spot on the team IMO, and I would be shocked if they both make the 53 man roster.

Shane Taylor I would definitely agree on cutting him to save the cap space but I also think it is smart to see what they have in the rookie first too. Bland is the new slot corner for sure and Makuamu can be a bit of a Swiss army knife in that secondary too.

I didn't forget about him. If Lewis doesn't recover the Cowboys can get nearly 5 million to part ways with him. He has one year left on his contract, this type of stuff isn't out of the question. I am not the only one dismissing that, plenty of others have talked about it. I am projecting who will be in the lineup week one, that's it based on Mike Clay and his projection of the depth chart.

Shane Taylor Seems like he should at least be mentioned and thats just an excuse because he was forgotten about, but Makuamu should be the 4th corner just like he ended up being last year. He plays slot and Bland moves outside if there is an injury. Wright wasn't any better than Joseph last year and IMO neither should be on the final 53.

Patrick Bowhay Hi Patrick, I am very aware that JL is still apart of this team, Wright has a better chance right now to start as the teams 4th corner than Lewis does returning from a foot injury. Do you remember how bad Michael Gallup looked when he returned last season? These take time to recover from, I noted about injuries in the post. You don’t just return from these types of things and make an immediate impact. He had surgery on his foot, not his upper body. If you read I said that Joseph was not good, and didn’t even having anything to note on him. We know he shouldn’t be around much longer.

Exactly, and just because the ESPN source of that ranking left out Lewis, this guy who should know better, excludes him too. Not to mention he’s still quoting the debunked move to full time end for Micah, who even if he wasn’t an end rushed a lot last season. Not sure there’s much room for an uptick from that perspective.

Thanks for the comments, folks. Did you see how bad Michael Gallup looked when he returned last season? You don't just return from these types of things and make an immediate impact. He had surgery on his foot, not his upper body. As for Micah: If you really think that he will spend more than 10% of his snaps as a linebacker, then so be it. It is not worth fighting over something that will be solved when he drops back as a linebacker five times a game and rush 99.5% of the games.

Anyone being honest, going with depth still has to put Dallas with or right behind Miami. Bland BTW has done more than show flashes. In the slot he can be a lockdown guy. And I will put Gilmore and Diggs up against anyone in the league. Lewis is a starter on nearly any other team and a break is easier to come back from that tendons ligament tears. Parsons will never be full time DE. Not going to do it simply for the loss of other teams having to keep track of him. Pointing out the problems with one team and for some reason ignoring the issues and possible injuries of other teams is a little disingenuous.

I agree that Lewis is indeed a starter on nearly any other team, I am not dismissing that. All I am saying is, I have to see him back. I talked up MG last season and thought the WR room would be sunshine and rainbows when he got back and it just takes time to recover from any type of injury that ends your season. More so if it is a part of the body you use that makes you great at your position. It becomes more of mental hurdle than anything else. (Don't want it to happen again, etc.)
