On Saturday, the Dallas Cowboys announced Brian Schottenheimer will be their new offensive coordinator. He is replacing Kellen Moore who recently parted ways with the Cowboys to take on the OC role for the Los Angeles Chargers.
Schottenheimer is in a new role with the Cowboys, but he’s not new to this type of job or to the team. He served as an offensive consultant to the Dallas Cowboys during the 2022 season. This was the 22nd season in the league for the 49-year-old.
In 2021, he was the passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Aside from that, he’s been an offensive coordinator for the Rams and the Seahawks. He has also been a quarterbacks coach for the Colts and the Jets.
“I am very happy to have Brian take on this key role with our team,” head coach Mike McCarthy said. “He has been an important part of our staff already and has a great grasp of where we are and where we want to go.”
THE MCCARTHY-SCHTTENHEIMER CONNECTION
McCarthy has connections to both Brian Schottenheimer and his father Marty Schottenheimer. The elder Schottenheimer is known for being one of only 13 coaches to win at least 200 games. Marty gave McCarthy his first NFL coaching job in 1993. He hired the then 29-year-old McCarthy as the quality control coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.
McCarthy ended up on the same staff with Brian Schottenheimer in 1998, his last season with the Chiefs. Brian was added as an offensive assistant that season.
It was announced earlier this week that Mike McCarthy is expected to be the play caller for the Dallas Cowboys next season. This means that Schottenheimer will likely be responsible for running practices, installing the offensive scheme, and the week-to-week game plan.
Brian Schottenheimer is known for his commitment to the running game while Coach McCarthy is expected to run a West Coast offense. It will be interesting to see what kind of offensive scheme grows from the influence of these coaches.
