Penn State WR KJ Hamler Fits Slot Need for Cowboys

You can never have too many weapons in the passing game in today’s NFL. The 2020 draft is maybe the most loaded class of wide receivers we’ve seen in history. Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb is the top receiver on a lot of draft boards. Route running wizard Jerry Jeudy and speedster Henry Ruggs out of Alabama are also at the top of the receiver list and will be picked in the first round in April.

The Cowboys have a need at the slot receiver position with the departure of veteran Randall Cobb to the Houston Texans. LSU’s Justin Jefferson, TCU’s Jalen Reagor, and Texas’s Devin Duvernay are three of the top slot receivers coming out of college. However, Penn State’s KJ Hamler is another option the Cowboys could steal on day two of the draft.

After coming off a torn ACL while attending IMG Academy in Florida, Hamler would redshirt his freshman year at Happy Valley. Fully healthy, he made a name for himself with 42 receptions for 754 yards and five touchdowns in 2018 and received honorable mention All-Big Ten honors as a receiver and kick returner. In 2019, he was even better with 56 receptions for 904 yards and eight touchdowns as he was named second-team All-Big Ten as a receiver and honorable mention as a kick returner.

You can’t teach speed and Hamler is a natural burner who can stretch the field. His run after catch ability is as electric as any receiver in the draft. He’s very elusive in the open field and can be utilized on gadget plays and jet sweeps. He showed excellent versatility with over 1,200 yards returning kicks in college.

Every team wants their best players to perform well in the biggest games and Hamler had some huge performances against Penn State’s top rivals. In 2018, albeit in a loss, he had 138 yards and a touchdown vs Ohio State. This past season, he had six receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns in a win vs Michigan.

Scouting report according to NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein

Hamler would fill the slot need for the Cowboys and add potentially help in the return game. He’ll be one the receivers to keep an eye on as the Cowboys look to solve their slot receiver issue.

    He’s too small. Will get tackled easy! Prefer bigger receivers: Options 1)Lynn Bowden 6-0 205 Kentucky (Playmaker). 2)Antonio Gibson 6-0 225 Memphis 4.39 3)Joe Reed 6-0 225 Virginia 4.45

Why would talented receiver from the best school in the nation go to a loser team like the cowgirls

I like KJ Hamlet, Brandon Aiyuk as well but either way I'll support the squad.

About time someone saw the Cowboys for for KJ. High character PennStater would be an immediate star for Cowboys. The slot monster we always hoped Tavon or Cobb would be. Move up to get him in the second round instead of using First round capital one the likes of Mims or Jefferson.
