Hunter Luepke’s breakout game marred by botched handoff

The debate will rage on for some time. And until Dak Prescott or Hunter Luepke offers an explanation we’ll never know for sure.

Did Luepke fail to secure the handoff? Did he expect to get the ball and just botched handling it, or did he think Prescott was pulling it back?

Looking at the replay from several angles only leads to multiple answers to those questions.

The bottom line: The handoff exchange was muffed by both players and Prescott was charged with the fumble.

It also cost Dallas, at minimum, three points in a two-point loss.

Up to that play, Luepke had been having a breakout game. After that play, he disappeared from the game plan.

His fellow rookies – aside from another solid performance by Brandon Aubrey – fared little better in Sunday’s loss.

Mazi Smith

(1st Round – Michigan – Defensive Tackle)

Smith got his second start of the season and was second among the team’s defensive tackles in snaps with 26 on defense.

Smith finished with one tackle – six yards downfield on Raheem Mostert in the first quarter. He also had six defensive snaps.

Smith had no other official snaps and no other notable plays in the game.

Luke Schoonmaker

(2nd Round – Michigan – Tight End)

Schoonmaker had 13 offensive snaps and 13 more on special teams. He appears to have fallen to TE3 on the depth chart behind Jake Ferguson (55 offensive snaps) and Peyton Hendershot (16/16).

He caught the only pass he was targeted on for four yards. He did have one special teams tackle on a punt return.

DeMarvion Overshown

(3rd Round – Texas – Linebacker)

Overshown continues to rehab from a pre-season knee injury suffered in Seattle.

Viliami Fehoko

(4th Round – San Jose State – Edge)

Fehoko was inactive once again. He has yet to see any action in a regular season game this year.

Asim Richards

(5th Round – North Carolina – Offensive Tackle)

After being inactive for six straight games, Richards was active against Miami partially due to Tyron Smith’s absence.

He has been inactive in eight of the Cowboys’ 15 games this season. Richards had four snaps on special teams on Sunday.

Eric Scott Jr.

(6th Round – New Mexico – Defensive Back)

Scott was inactive once again. He has yet to see any action in a regular season game this year.

Deuce Vaughn

(6th Round – Kansas State – Running Back)

Vaughn was inactive for the sixth straight game and ninth overall for the year. He has 38 rushing yards and 11 receiving yards for the year.

Barring an injury, Vaughn’s time as the darling of Dallas appears to be over.

Jalen Brooks

(7th Round – South Carolina – Wide Receiver)

Brooks was inactive, the 10th time in 15 games he has not suited up. Brooks has five catches for 63 yards on the season.

T.J. Bass

(UDFA – Oregon – Guard)

Bass saw limited action in Sunday’s loss. He played two snaps at guard on offense and another four on special teams.

As much as Chuma Edoga struggled on Sunday, perhaps Bass might have been the better option to start instead.

Hunter Luepke

(UDFA – North Dakota State – Running Back)

Luepke was on the cusp of having a breakout day. On the Cowboys’ game-opening drive, he converted two third-and-1 rushes into first downs and a total of three rushing yards.

Luepke then caught an eight-yard pass two plays later.

Hunter Luepke scores his first NFL touchdown against the Patriots.

On first-and-goal from the one, Luepke appeared to have scored his second career touchdown. Except Prescott’s handoff to Luepke misfired.

Luepke was in the endzone. The football was lying at the two and the Dolphins recovered the ball.

Luepke never touched the ball again.

It remains to be seen if the Cowboys go back to him in the games ahead. He proved – the botched handoff at the goal line notwithstanding – that he can convert short-yardage plays.

Brandon Aubrey

(UDFA – Notre Dame – Kicker)

Aubrey had a perfect game. Made both field goals to extend his NFL record to 33 straight to begin a career.

He converted both extra points and booted all five kickoffs into the endzone.

At this point, the NFL should just put the points on the board before he walks out to kick the ball.

People pointing at the defense, but they held Miami to 22 points. Dolphins average just over 30 points a game, Cowboys have average giving up just over 19 points/game. So, they were almost in line defensively. The big gap was on offense average 30 and putting up just 20. Of course, the quality of this opponent was better than in majority of the other games.

Should have been using him more earlier in the season.

Yeah, they should have. Which makes that play at the goal line that much more painful because McCarthy will likely go away from it now. Notice Luepke never saw the ball again the rest of the game?

Are defense hasn’t shown up when it matters

So we're going to ignore Pollard not scoring when it looked like he could have made the pylon, and then didn't lower his shoulder and allowed himself to be tackled with one arm by a DB on the play before? Sure, its all the rookie's fault.

That play costs us but we had many chances to win , had our defense hold off. To me ,we had one point lead all the defense gotta do was to protect that 75 yards.

That is the biggest issue. The defense wasn't "tired", Dallas had the T.O.P. advantage even after that final drive. They needed to make a stop and just didn't get it done.

And missed blocks. McCarthy does not instill discipline. Week after week, after week. Dropped balls, false starts, face masks, one yard short, stepped out of bounds, poor clock management, red flag not thrown in time, you name it, they will show you something new next week.

I mean Dak put the ball right up in there, Luepke is definitely at fault on this one The kid botched it and it's sad they put the fumble on Dak in the box score.

Dak was the last player to have possession of the ball. The fumble is credited to him by rule. Looking at the play again its 50-50. Dak did not "put the ball right there" and Luepke didn't look like he expected the ball and never had his arms out enough to take it the handoff. That's a mistake that can be cleaned up, but they need to go back to that play because it worked twice on that drive before the botched exchange.

Was looking for that to happen..but it did do better next time..

Bum cost us the game. 27-22 may have been the final score. We can only assume.

So, we're just going to ignore Tony Pollard's lack of effort on the play before and lay it all on the rookie? Okay...

It’s pretty simple. That handoff was way to high to handle. Dak has to stick that in his gut. Totally on Dak.

That was my main issue, it wasn't a perfect handoff and Luepke never acted like he thought he had the ball. I still think it was a miscommunication on the play. It can be cleaned up. But, I note that the play worked all three times on that drive. Luepke got into the endzone before anyone realized the ball was lying back on the 2.

If Cowboys don’t fumble right there, they win this game That’s OK it doesn’t matter what happens with the Cowboys there in the playoffs We’re not gonna go far in the playoffs anyways Cowboys just don’t have the run game we just don’t
