The Dallas Cowboys began their offseason with a splash yesterday as the news dropped that they signed Quarterback Dak Prescott to a long-term deal. With that now in the rear view, the Cowboys begin the task of forming the roster they’ll take to training camp in 2021.
On player who won’t stay with the Cowboys as they get ready to enter free agency is Fullback Jamize Olawale.
Olawale came over from the then Oakland Raiders and was thought to be a piece that could help the Dallas Cowboys create mismatches with his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. Well, in his tenure with the Cowboys he never really got many opportunities and is most remembered, for better or worse, for dropping a would be touchdown on a short pass from Prescott.
It was a disappointing run for the promising acquisition. As the Cowboys moved to more of an 11-personnel base offense, Olawale could never really find a role.
Then, as COVID-19 struck, Olawale was one of two Dallas Cowboys to opt-out of the 2020 season.
It’s likely that the Dallas Cowboys will designate Olawale as a post-June 1st designation, which would allow them to save $1.175 million on the salary cap with $600,000 in dead money. Without the designation, the Cowboys would be on the hook for $1.2 million in dead money with only a savings of $575,000.
Now, Olawale will be looking for a new home in 2021 looking for a fresh start at a position that is being used less and less in the NFL.
