It has been reported today that Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrance Williams will miss most, if not all, of the offseason program following surgery to repair a broken foot. It is not yet known when, or how, Williams suffered the injury.
This news may help explain the Cowboys’ sudden aggressive pursuit of receivers in free agency. Dallas has signed both Allen Hurns and Deonte Thompson in the last few days.
Hurns, who will average $6 million per season, is already expected to take over as the number-two receiver. The Cowboys gave yet to release or trade Dez Bryant, and that seems less likely with each passing day.
Even with these additions, Williams’ roster spot seems safe. There is no cap relief in cutting him and a trade partner may be hard to find for a marginal talent. This injury will only further complicate a trade.
Thankfully, Terrance’s five seasons in Dallas means he won’t be too negatively affected by the lost time. He knows the system and should come back just fine, hopefully in time for a few preseason games if not training camp.
The big question is just how far down the depth chart he might fall.
