Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy having surgery for Appendicitis, expects to coach vs. Eagles

Mike McCarthy

News from Dallas this afternoon is that Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy will undergo surgery today after having been diagnosed Wednesday morning with acute appendicitis.

He is expected to be discharged from the hospital later in the day and expects to coach Sunday evening vs. Eagles.

Michael Gehlken, a reporter for the Dallas Morning News, was the first to report.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and ST coordinator John Fassel will oversee Wednesday’s practice in Mike McCarthy’s absence, the team said in a news release. https://t.co/ubdKAbddOP

I am not a doctor, but after some quick searches on what this was, I found that appendicitis is the inflammation of the vermiform appendix.

It typically presents acutely within 24 hours of onset.

It doesn’t sound like anyone should panic.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn said Coach Mike McCarthy didn’t look good this morning. He complained of stomach pain and initially tried to fight through it. It was too much to deal with so he went to see the medical people, where he was diagnosed pic.twitter.com/EWwaKiPoPn

If McCarthy can’t coach on Sunday Night Football against the Eagles, Dan Quinn will take over that role.

The former head coach of the Falcons who led them to the Super Bowl, had to step in once since his time as the defensive coordinator for Dallas.

In December 2021, McCarthy tested positive for COVID-19, and Quinn led the Cowboys to a 27-17 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

The defense intercepted four passes in that game.

Having a guy like Quinn on the staff who has success in this league is a luxury. He can step in if needed and win ball games.

While McCarthy is out today, their three coordinators will run practice until he returns.

Quinn, Brain Schottenheimer, and John Fassel.

Mike McCarthy is scheduled for surgery today to deal with acute appendicitis. He is expected to be released today and coach on Sunday. Coordinators Dan Quinn, Brian Schottenheimer and John Fassel will run practice in McCarthy's absence.

As mentioned above, I don’t know much about this, but it sounds like it shouldn’t be a huge problem as he is going in for surgery and being released the same day.

That is about all the information anyone has right now, so I am hoping for a quick recovery for Coach McCarthy.

If he can’t return to the sidelines on Sunday, I trust Quinn entirely to lead this team to a victory over the Eagles on Sunday Night.
