Cowboys draft looks a lot different after first week of free agency

Cowboys Draft: 2025 class has a lot of talent at this position for Dallas

Well, after a week of free agents getting signed left and right, the Dallas Cowboys once again have shown all the fans they simply don’t care enough about winning football games.

After clearing all the cap space they did last week, they have done nothing in return attempting to make this football team better.

While you look around the league, you see team after team getting better every single day, the Dallas Cowboys have gotten worse, actually.

With the NFL Draft in about a month, the Cowboys pick 12th, and with the moves that some other teams have made via free agency, the outlook on the Cowboys draft may look a lot different.

The Dallas Cowboys have signed Javonte Williams to a one-year deal. It's a good fantasy move for Williams initially, but his stock could still fall after the NFL draft. pic.twitter.com/uv0VoJnHvc

One team I hint at is the Chicago Bears, who pick two spots ahead of Dallas, they were probably prepared to pick an offensive lineman, but after their productive week, they can take the best available player, and that guy might be Ashton Jeanty.

Jeanty is the guy many thought the Cowboys would take, but now I am not so sure.

Who Knows

At this point, I have no idea what this front office is going to do. They will probably draft some guy who is a project and wasn’t supposed to be drafted until the second round.

They will look to beef up both the offensive line and defensive line, and sure they signed Soloman Thomas, but he is a role guy.

They also added a guy from the Dolphins on the offensive line, but now I think they will wait to get a running back in maybe the 2nd or 3rd round and get a bigger need.

Derrick Harmon, a defensive lineman from Oregon, fits the bill if he is there.

Harmon does a lot of things well and would help give the Cowboys help with Osa Odighizuwa.

He would fit nicely in Matt Eberflus’ four-down defense. He’s likely never going to be a high-end sack guy, but Harmon can stay on the field because of his ability to affect the run and pass.

This idea has really flipped from a week ago, when the front office cleared as much space as they did, like why even do that if you don’t plan to do anything at all?

Watching Oregon 3T Derrick Harmon (#55). Pass rush productivity is obvious (led FBS in pressures) but I’ve been impressed by how he holds his ground vs doubles despite playing a little high. Very complete player. pic.twitter.com/DCojAnl5Hm

They could have signed the players they have this week without making more room, so what is the point?

This Won’t Work

Now they are going to need to lean on the draft in which they probably won’t even get the player that everyone thought they would two weeks ago.

That is because teams have been active in free agency and filled what they needed to fill, while the Cowboys front office is sitting back acting like this won’t fail for the 500th time in a row.

It is like trying to fix a leaking boat with a bunch of flex tape or something. You can’t tell me it isn’t true?

The last time they spent over $5 million in free agency was when they signed Greg Hardy!

Just think about that for a moment. I just want to win football games, and this isn’t working!

Dallas traded for Kaiir Elam a former first round pick of the Bills. They traded a 5th and 7th round picks. He will probably have to start with the injury to Trevon Diggs.

Jerry Jones is adding former first-round picks for cheap because they did not work out on other teams as his form of free agency, and if you think that will work, then we can agree to disagree.

I don’t know what else the Dallas Cowboys can do, but this isn’t it. Trading for a former first round bust that will never pan out is not the move.

I mean sure, they are trying to do something, but look what the Eagles did last season and look what Washington is doing this offseason.

That is how you get to the next level!

Great insights Shane. The moves they made so far might be ok if we were two weeks further along in free agency. The Dallas front office fundamentally misunderstands what FA is all about. FA should be bringing in proven commodities that make you better immediately, but instead they are still reaching for development projects. The Draft is where we look for traits and projects. Free Agents already have film at the NFL level, and we know what their performance looks like. Take advantage of that! Bring in guys that get the job done!

Last year people complained because did nothing in free agency and now you are complaining when they do. Dallas has a lot of holes and signing just one player with big bucks isn't going to fill it. Dallas also needs money to resign Parsons. Also there are still free agents like Cooper Kup and Stefon Diggs still available.

Shane I get you, you're just as frustrated as I am as a Cowboys fan. But after years of seeing JJ sign 2nd or 3rd tier free agents, I finally admit what I always knew but never wanted to admit: Jerry Jones doesn't care about his team winning anything! He's a business man and will always be a business man. His only concern for the past years is how much more money can go into his bank account from everything that sells with Cowboys logos, merch. He would do all us Cowboys fans a huge favor if he sold the team to a new owner that really cares about their fans and that cares about winning like Josh Harris in Washington and Jeff lurie in Philly.

This is the biggest load of BS I have had the displeasure to read so far. Nothing you said makes much sense and This team has made some very good sneaky moves. Just getting Osa back for 6 million less than Milton signed for is a big deal. And speaking of the Eagles. They have lost most of the best starters on that D and losing more starters than anyone but the 49ers for the most part. Becton is going to end up leaving as well. If you really want to write about the Cowboys, put some real effort into it. Most of your articles are fan level at best that shows little understanding of more.

They do what they do why is it such a surprise. Jerry Jones won three Super Bowls as the owner GM and is in the Hall of Fame and is a billionaire, if they win 10 games a year they keep the seats full and they’re the number one selling team in the world I don’t understand why you get so upset you’re not employed by them it makes no difference in your day what they do they’re not paying you. You still have to go to work every day the sun‘s gonna rise. Everything‘s gonna be the same. Go watch the games cheer for your favorite team as I do which is Dallas and that’s just the way it is, but if they don’t win, I still have to get up and go to work every day grow up.
