4 Reasons Terrance Williams Won’t Be a Cowboy

Will Terrance Williams be Back with Cowboys in 2018?

Is Terrance Williams Roster Spot Safe with Dallas Cowboys? The Dallas Cowboys have made it their mission this off-season to revamp the wide receivers group. After a disappointing season of dropped passes, tipped catches turning into interceptions, and poor route running, 2018 will feature an almost completely new core of pass catchers.

Going into the new season, Terrance Williams was expected by some to become the new number one receiver in Dallas. However, things have gone wrong for Williams, both on and off the field, and his future with the Cowboys is not a sure thing.

And it’s not just one reason why Williams might not be a Cowboy, there are a number of reasons that have culminated in him playing his last snap in Dallas. Some are bigger than others, but the writing has been on the wall for players over and over again. Terrance Williams is just another in a long line of players who’ve overstayed their welcome.

1. Williams’ Arrest

Let’s start with the obvious and most recent. On May 19, Terrance Williams was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor public intoxication. When the news broke, his mug shot and subsequent arrest video were released.

Jerry Jones has staunchly supported his players for off-the-field incidents, such as Adam Jones and Michael Irvin. Even going to the point that it seems ridiculous to do so.

However, Jerry Jones now seems to have tightened his leash around players IF they’ve produced and as we’ll see next, Terrance Williams’ production hasn’t been enough to protect him.

2. Williams’ Production

With Jason Witten slowing down and Dez Bryant not playing like his old self, it was hoped that Williams would be able to step up and show out. However, Williams instead posted career lows in receiving yards (568) and touchdowns (0). 2017 was his worst season to date, and it may have hurt his chances in the future.

Terrance Williams has had his chances in the past to be a number one receiver, due to injury to Dez Bryant, but wasn’t able to dominate like one. In a season where Dak Prescott needed Williams to ball out, he deflated instead.

3. Unfamiliar Faces

Last year’s receiving corp consisted of Williams, Dez Bryant, Cole Beasley, Ryan Switzer, Brice Butler and Noah Brown. As it stands today, three of the six are gone.

  • Dez Bryant was released
  • Brice Butler signed with Arizona in free agency
  • Ryan Switzer was traded to Oakland

Dez was not playing up to his price tag, Switzer became a valuable trade asset, and the team showed almost no signs that they intended on resigning Butler.

These moves were all made in the hope of giving Dak Prescott “Dak-friendly receivers.” With the moves made, one has to wonder if Williams is next. A 50% change in a position group is rare in a single off-season, but the team looks as though it may have made the right decisions.

Is trading or releasing Terrance Williams the next move?

4. Off-season Reload

In addition to the loss of three of last year’s receivers, the team has gained some new faces. Deonte Thompson and Allen Hurns were signed via free agency, Micheal Gallup and Cedrick Wilson were drafted, and the team traded for Tavon Austin in the draft (though he was later designated as a running back).

Traditionally, the Cowboys usually only keep five or six receivers on their roster. Though it’s possible the team keeps seven receivers, Williams will need to go up against Hurns, Thompson, Wilson, Gallup, Cole Beasley and Noah Brown for playing time.

As I mentioned earlier, the writing is on the wall. And the writing for Terrance Williams was bigger than John Hancock’s at this juncture. Terrance Williams is looking like the odd man out.

T Will will be my most unpopular choice to keep He helped Dallas before Brice Butler resigned in order to keep the offense in place for the young Prescott And He did so with a team friendly deal & a squeaky-clean PR record But when teams schemed to take away Dak's weapons by keying in on their weaknesses & not just his, (in which 5 receivers weaknesses far outlays that if the Qb) Combined with barely no time to go through his progressions, (due to the loss of 2 O line starters then loss of 2 pro bowler O linemen + Zeke) which left less time for them to get open ,,,,,,,,Terrance production, along witheveryone else's regressed Now, for financial sense coupled with the purposes of "just in case " insurance Dallas need to carefully consider keeping T Will onboard especially in light of his bigplay making ability in key moments despite having a dismal '17 season Then he just might be a trade asset/part of a trade pkg, etc,,,,, who knows Hopefully the latter is most attractive due to a very promising training camp I also think Dallas should go 6 WR regardless as Dak-friendly/team-friendly with 4TE's Plus keeping Williams for a waste-not mentality Prayerfully he bounces back & live up to his contract & gives Dallas value for next year's trade options

TWill has a Low Football IQ with zero consistency. When Dez was out while Romo was here TWill never took over and tried to be lead Dog. He is a 3rd/4th WR at best pretending to be a Number 2. A WR worth his weight will find some way to score a TD and Dak,O-Linemen/Zeke,Team Injuries is not to Blame for that.

That's mostly true For without the threat of Zeke & injury to both Smith # Martin at critical points in the season, Prescott simply didn't have time to attempt certain passes Expert hof QB have been defending Dak in that the best can't pass from being buried in the turf Zeke's absence hurt every area of the offense & Dez's decline didn't loosen the defense for its 2nd receiver But with this being said, I maintain my opinion that if they got rid if Dez then why keep Williams except for worse case scenario & of course, the salary hit Then I'm pretty sure Come. R Goddell is going to have a say in this Lamborghini incident So T. Will bust might not be an option anyway He's just not my favorite & may be a progress stopper for the remaining future WR's that need critical reps prior to season opener

Unless he gets suspended he wont be released this year because of his contract.

Yes, Which is why I feel they should go 6-7 wr's this season Especially if T Will gets suspended Today, David Irvin just got his 4 games suspension & I feel T Will has just as an imminent suspension looming which will cause Dallas to be very prepared receiver wise Hint Use his release salary to add another free agent receiver I feel if one averages out Williams career stats, he'd only be equivalent to a #3 receiver

Irving got suspended bc of PED and I dont think he gets re signed. I think if T will gets suspended, i think he has a good chance to be released. I think Gallop will take over as the no. 2 WR.

Very feasible However, hypothetically if David Irvin comes back & say, gets in 12games the production DLaw got in 16games,,,,,,,I just don't see a release ,,,,even if he gets 1-1/2 sack per game they won't release him And I can accept if they continue to give prove it one year deals or an extension that was heavy laced with incentives until he proved himself mature off the field We definitely don't want nor need Philly, Redskins or Giants with him And I'm not going to limit Michael Gallup to the 2nd WR position He has a very high ceiling Cole, is more of a proven #1 than them all at this point Training Camp & preseason will filter things out Too early to predict for sure But overall I can agree with your take on this
