The way too early, weeks before camp, NFC East predictions

Will the NFC East go Beast, or Least next season?

Yes, we’re still three weeks away from training camp opening in Oxnard. The Cowboys still need to add at least one more kicker. And who knows whom the injury bug will bite.

But, based on the draft and some free agent signings, it’s time to make our second round of predictions on how the NFC East will shake out.

Since the last time I posted my prognostications, just prior to the NFL Draft in April, a few things have changed. But does it change my predictions? Let’s see.

The Original Predictions

Back in April here’s how I had the final standings looking:

  • Dallas 12-5
  • New York 11-6
  • Philadelphia 8-9
  • Washington 5-12

Both the Cowboys and Eagles addressed key needs in the draft – aside from the Schoonmaker pick by Dallas in the second round.

The Eagles decided to draft the Georgia Bulldogs’ defensive line. Which should work out if they take away their players’ drivers licenses.

The Giants filled some holes in the draft too. The Commanders? Well, the Commanders are going through new ownership and they are likely a year or two from challenging for even a wild card spot.

So, with the draft, rookie mini-camps and OTAs out of the way, how is the NFC East shaping up? Has anything changed since April’s predictions?

Yes and no. Yes, the predicted records will change, but not the positioning. Here’s why.

Dallas Cowboys

The only question marks hanging over the Cowboys are: With Schoonmaker getting banged up in non-contact drills, did the curse of second-round tight ends in Dallas claim another victim?

Also, are the Cowboys going to ride with Tristan Vizcaino as their kicker going into the regular season? Or will they bring in a veteran free agent (Mason Crosby, Robbie Gould) or a USFL kicker (Luis Aguilar, Matt Coghlin)?

I know my colleague Mario Herrera Jr. mentioned that some Cowboys insiders believe Brett Mahrer could return back on Sunday. But I myself will lead the charge of the pitchfork and torch brigade on The Star in Frisco if that happens.

Looking at the schedule, with the teams as they are now, I’m upgrading Dallas to a 14-3 finish to win the NFC East.

The three losses? At San Francisco on Oct. 8, at Buffalo on Dec. 17, at Miami on Dec. 24th. Otherwise, a clean sweep over their NFC East rivals and a 6-3 record against the rest of the NFL.

New York Giants

Like Dallas, I’m upgrading the Giants by one win. They’ll also lose both games on the road in Miami and Buffalo, as well as both games to the Cowboys and split their series with the Eagles.

It will be good enough for a 12-5 finish and second place in the division. It will also earn them a wild card playoff spot.

Philadelphia Eagles

I counted seven wins last year that the Eagles were fortunate enough to escape with. Their luck is going to run out in 2023.

I can already hear the Eagles faithful yelling: “But, but, muh Jalen Hurts!” Yeah. Tell me how the history of running backs playing quarterback have done over the long term in the NFL.

I suspect Jalen Hurts will not start all 17 games for the Eagles in 2023. He’s going to take one too many hits in 2023 and that will be that.

And the 2023 schedule is not going to be kind on the Eagles either. I’ll keep the Eagles at 8-9 and in a playoff-missing third place for now.

Washington Commanders

The change of ownership has been long overdue in D.C. But they are playing in a tough division and the Commanders just don’t have the firepower to hang with their rivals.

My 5-12 prediction in April might have been overly optimistic. A record of 3-14 might be more on target.

Their best hope for an NFC East win might come in the season finale. A Cowboys team with nothing to play for in Week 18 might just be coasting enough to let the Commanders steal a victory.

I didn't read too far into it and quit.

Even for a non-objective, homer Dallas fan writer, this is clearly over the top. This isn't really a prediction--it's just a Dallas fan's fantasy.

No one can actually predict the season, because injuries change the outcome.

Enjoyed the dream scenario and kudos for lofty thinking. As a Dallas fan, Philly is still the tops until they're not, and even with all the changes should do better than 8 wins. The Giants are expected to be a tough out this year. Washington, well, moving right along. Dallas has a presumably harder schedule this year, and even with the improvements would be hard-pressed to get back to 12 wins. I hope you're right, but that's a stretch even in the best of times.

'Tis why the article is entitled "Way too early" after all. But I see the Eagles taking a huge step backward this year. They lost key starters on defense and no matter how good a rookie is, he's still a rookie. They lost both coordinators which will change the entire team. And I will die on the hill that a lot of their wins in 2022 came with a lot of things falling their way. I don't see their luck holding out over the 2023 season. But again, its only July. Still eight weeks to go before the opening kickoff, so we'll see. Thanks for reading.

Richard, don't try explaining logic to idiots! BIG WASTE OF YOUR VALUABLE TIME!!!

The Eagles have a presumably tough schedule too, so they should be expected to land in the 10-12 range. Any worse would certainly be welcomed. For the first time in many years, I'm actually stoked about the upcoming season. Definitely not a Prescott fan, but McCarthy should better know how to call and design the game to his strengths and help cover his weaknesses.
        1. Lawrence
Agreed! I think most of Dak's problems came as a result of Kellen Moore's hidden agenda which was the same as his mentor's Jason Garrett's was while he was Offensive Coordinator in Dallas. Garrett was trying to get Wade Phillips fired, Moore was trying to get McCarthy fired!!!!
          1. SolomanA
Although we'll probably never know the true background, it seems as though McCarthy was given a "no interference" directive from the front office in regards to Moore. It took two flameouts in the playoffs to show that Moore was likely the biggest problem to the ineffective offensive production against the 49ers. How much of the problem is something we'll likely find out this season as we watch how both Prescott and Moore do in their respective places.

Yeah but 8 wins is laughable. Guess it worked, you got your clicks.

There are many such instances, but lets look at two recent ones: 2020, after losing to Kansas City in the Super Bowl to end the 2019 season, the 49ers went 6-10. After winning their last Super Bowl following a 13-3 record in 2017, the Eagles slipped all the way back to 9-7 the next two seasons. Its happened before. It will happen again. Likely this very season. Check back with me in January and we'll see who was right.

Think the Birds could win 8 games with Mariota at QB. Rich retired in 2013, must've been the last time he watched the NFL. Enjoy the excellence of McCarthy playcalling this year.
      1. SolomanA
8 wins with Mariota would be a snap. As for the McCarthy play-calling, it can't get much worse than Moore.
        1. Lawrence
You're spot on about that dumb ass Hillbilly Kellen Moore. Plus Elliott's lack of production in the run game while remaining the starting tailback was even more stupid than Moore's play calling. Gpod Riddance and I feel bad for Justin Herbert having to desl with Moore's bogus play calling.

This blogger seriously needs to lay off the drugs! The cowboys are gonna puke this season! They had such an easy schedule last year and couldn't do anything with it beside get humiliated...now they have a difficult one and Dak is still trash!

I don't see 14 wins for the Cowboys. The offseason adds look good but is Cooks better than Cooper, probably not. The CB is a nice add, but 14 wins is lofty, IMO. Don't forget EE is gone, and we don't exactly know the ramifications yet. I think Philly will do better than 8 wins and don't discount Washington. I think they will do better than 3 wins (I like their front four and Davis at LB). Giants are a bit tricker to figure. Will their QB continue to improve or not?
  9. Richard Delagarza
Would be nice but they have to play the game first

Jesus that was the worst take on the Eagles I’ve ever seen, you’re an absolute clown of a writer, find a new profession.
    1. Lawrence
I'm not a writer Richard, but I AGREE with you 100%. This is an OVERRATED TEAM, Coached by a WAY OVERRATED HEAD COACH! The Crash And Burn Is Just Around The Corner!!! The University Of Georgia Defense play great for Kirby Smart in the SEC. Let's see if they can duplicate that effort in a City that changes it's feelings about the Eagles like most people change their shirts. Jalen Hurts hasn't become Patrick Mahomes in one lucky season.
      1. Bob
Keep Mahimes. I wouldnt trade Hurts for anyone. Talk to me in February.
        1. Lawrence
You'll be sitting home crying in February. Just like last season. Instead of "Fly Eagles Fly" it's going to be "Cry Eagles Cry" AGAIN!!!!

Retired in 2013 or fired in 2013. This might be the worst take ever.
        1. Lawrence
If you're really Nakobe Dean, you're probably really missing UGA right about now as far as football is concerned. Kirby Smart is not going to walk into the compex at Philadelphia. Overrated Head Coach and a Cocky Not So Talented Football Team with HORRIBLE FANS! Recipe For Disaster!!!!
